Poultry Housing and Management Section

This section is mandated to carry out research on various aspects of housing and management for different species of poultry, post-graduate teaching, training and consultancy services in the areas of poultry housing and management. This section has Turkey Research Unit, Emu Research Unit and a laboratory equipped with poultry house gas analyzer and dust analyzer.

Research Activities & Achievements

Designing of poultry farm appliances:

    • Designed, got fabricated and tested battery brooders, individual and colony laying cages, feeders and waterers as well as egg-setters and pedigree hatching boxes for  Japanese quails
    • Designed, got fabricated and tested California colony laying cages for commercial layers

Optimizing floor space requirements for diversified poultry:

    • Optimized floor space requirements of meat type and egg type Japanese quails.
    • Optimized floor space requirement and brooder cage density of commercial broiler chickens.
    • Optimized brooder house floor space requirement of turkey chicks/ poults.

Development of management practices for diversified poultry species:

    • Standardized brooding and rearing practices of broilers, Japanese quails and turkey chicks.
    • Evaluated suitable economically viable brooding methods for diversified poultry chicks .
    • Evaluated different rearing systems for chickens and turkey.
    • Evaluated performace of superior layers, broilers, turkey, quail and native fowl crosses at high altitude (~2000 m) in the Kumaon region aimed at promoting hill poultry production.

Developemnt of low-cost poultry houses for promoting small-scale rural poultry production:

    • Evaluated traditional building materials based on local resources for cheaper but durable poultry houses.
    • Designed, got fabricated and tested low-cost poultry houses for small rural farmers.
    • Evaluated performance and economics of commercial broilers and layers in conventional and low-cost poultry houses.

Assessment of emmission of gasses in poultry houses:

    • Assessed emmission of different poultry house gases, such as ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, carbon monoxide and dust particles in different poultry production systems during varied environmental conditions.
    • Developed strategies to reduce poultry house pollutants for  eco-friendly poultry production.

Technology Developed

Low-cost poultry houses for small scale rural poultry farming: In order to economise poultry farming, low-cost poultry houses have been designed using  locally available building materials like mud, bricks, wood, bamboo, rice straw, terracotta tiles, tarpoline and plastic sheets etc. for both broilers and layer chickens.

California type colony cages for layers: To provide better welfare and improvement in production potential, California type colony laying cages have been designed, got fabricated and are being used for housing 5-6 layers in one cage.

Turkey Research Unit

This unit has two turkey varieties viz., Broad Breasted White and Black plumage.

Research Activities:

  • Maintenance, evaluation and propagation of turkey, primarily for meat production.
  • Development of feeding and farm management practices for growing poults, toms and hens under commercial and rural conditions.
  • Preparation of turkey diets from non-conventional feed ingredients.
  • Study of biochemical parameters as affected by age, housing and nutrition.
  • Artificial insemination

Major Achievements:

  • Requirements of protein and energy for growing poults upto 8th week of age under cage rearing system have been worked out.
  • Different floor density for growing poults up to 8th week of age under cage rearing system has been worked out.
  • Feed supplemented with 0.5% neem leaf powder boosted the immunity in turkey poults and might substitute antibiotics in the feed.
  • High immune diet enhanced egg weight, chick weight, fertility and hatchability and elicit better immune response in turkey breeders.
  • Poultry house pollutants have been estimated for different kind of rearing systems during varied seasons.
  • Designing and construction of California type colony laying cages for White leghorn layers.
