Strategies to Meet the Future Demand in the Poultry Sector
Sl. Thematic area Focus area Strategy Target 2030 Target 2047
1.

Strengthening poultry research

  • Enhancing productivity in the backyard poultry from existing levels 104.16 eggs/ bird/year.
  • Enhancing productivity in commercial poultry (eggs) from existing levels of 286.21 eggs/ bird/year.
  • By reducing the marketing age from existing 25 weeks/ bird in backyard poultry to attain a body weight of 1.5 kg.
  • Potential yield improvement through a targeted breed improvement program (to shift the production frontiers).
  • Improving productivity through breed improvement and the development of crosses.
  • Precision farming in poultry disease forecasting and disease management.
  • Reducing post-harvest loss through optimized management.
  • Achieving productivity targets (average yield per bird/year).
  • - In backyard poultry: 113.63 eggs - In commercial poultry 290.24 eggs
  • Resultant national egg production with an expected increase up to approximately 213.31 billion eggs (~10.67 MMT).
  • In backyard poultry, attain a body weight of 1.5 kg in 20 weeks.
  • Achieving productivity targets (average yield per bird/year)
  • - In backyard poultry: 140.35 eggs - In commercial poultry: 300.27 eggs
  • Resultant national egg production with an expected increase up to approximately 427.1 billion eggs (~21.35 MMT)
  • In backyard poultry, to attain a body weight of 1.5 kg. in 17 weeks.
2.

Increasing population of highly productive poultry

Increasing production of quality parents/ germplasm of poultry (Existing ratio of desi backyard to improved backyard poultry = 1: 0.185)

Development and expansion of incubation/ hatching (satellite hatcheries) and brooding (mother units) facilities to enhance the proportion of improved backyard in relation to the desi backyard poultry population.

Improving the ratio of desi backyard to improved backyard poultry to 1: 0.263

Improving the ratio of desi backyard to improved backyard poultry to 1: 0.509
